HOBART INFORMATION
Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, holds two records. One as the Southernmost capital city in Australia the other as the 2nd oldest capital city. The city offers both history in its Georgian buildings and harbour, and modern elements. It is surrounded by Derwent River and Mt. Wellington.

The city began as a town of tents and huts with a population of 262, but was named a city in 1842. Important industries included whaling, shipbuilding and export of corn and wool.

The city is fairly small with the streets laid out in a grid, with the Elizabeth Street Mall being the centre. You'll also find a further shopping area along Elizabeth Street. For history visit the Georgian warehouses along the waterfront and the colony district of Battery Point. The university and casino are further along the river on Sandy Bay. To the north of the city is The Domain, a recreation centre, including the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. There is also a bridge crossing to the east and the airport.

LAUNCESTON INFORMATION
Launceston is a city in the north of the state of Tasmania, Australia, with a population (greater urban and statistical sub division) of 103,325 located at the juncture of the North Esk, South Esk, and Tamar rivers. It is the second largest city in Tasmania after the state capital Hobart. Settled by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities and is home to the largest selection[not specific enough to verify of nineteenth century buildings in Australia. Like many Australian places, it was named after a town in the United Kingdom — in this case, Launceston, Cornwall.

Launceston has also been home to several firsts such as the first use of anesthetic in the Southern Hemisphere, the first Australian city to have underground sewers and the first Australian city to be lit by hydroelectricity. The city has a cool temperature climate with four distinct seasons. The average February maximum temperature is 24.4 °C (76 °F) with the average maximum dropping to 12.5 °C (54 °F) in July.

By 1827, Launceston's population had climbed to 2,000 and the town had become an export centre, mainly for the colony's northern pastoral industry. Tin was discovered at Mount Bischoff in 1871 in north-western Tasmania, starting a minerals boom. Gold mining commenced approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) away in Beaconsfield in 1877.
